Checked out your blog having been absent for many weeks. So sorry to hear the news of Clyde's passing. Losing a friend like that is always hard, but, I found that another one of the understandings one has when owning a pet is that it is a transitory experience that one tries to maximize while it lasts. I also think the cat understands that and reciprocates. As such, it brings a kind of calm to the sadness.
Bringing in another friend is also a part of that lifelong pact of cat ownership, in a kind of " The King is dead, long live the King" ritual.
May Pal Joey bring both you and Mary many years of joy.
